Another Summer Update!

Greetings and a blessed Lord’s Day to you all!

Sorry that the site’s been so silent over the past year – much of the time and energy has been enjoying great teaching and preaching at Asheville Bible Church under Pastor Pat Leahy. It’s been quite a momentous year as we see the dilution or outright removal of the religious freedoms we Christians have historically enjoyed in free exercise.

This is neither surprising nor unexpected.

The Faithful have long known these things would come to pass – it is that very recognition of the exceptional blessings we enjoyed in that rare season which causes many of the faithful to oppose “Progressive” movements and ideologies. But that’s another discussion for another day. The point is that our Lord is indeed Sovereign, as John Newton wrote in his letter to William Bull:

The whole system of my politics is summed up in that one sentence, “The Lord reigns!”

The times look awfully dark indeed; and as the clouds grow thicker, the stupidity of the nation seems proportionally to increase. If the Lord had not a remnant here, I would have very formidable apprehensions. But he loves his children; some are sighing and mourning before him, and I am sure he hears their sighs, and sees their tears. I trust there is mercy in store for us at the bottom; but I expect a shaking time before things get into a right channel, before we are humbled, and are taught to give him the glory.

The state of the nation, the state of the churches — both are deplorable. Those who should be praying — are disputing and fighting among themselves! Alas! how many professors are more concerned for the mistakes of government, or of the Americans, than for their own sins! When will these things end?

The time of shaking is at hand, the furnace is being stoked, the proving of mere professors is not to be forestalled another day! I remind you of that which the Apostle Paul wrote of this day, and of its people:

Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away…” – 2 Timothy 3:52 Timothy 3:5
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

“Godliness” is “eusebeias” (SG 2150) and means “reverence, respect, piety towards God.”

Dismiss from your mind such trifles as “will the church lost it’s tax exemption?” or “Shall I be able to discuss Godly things at my workplace?” What you shall soon see, O Christian, is the day where a large and widespread “church” will hold all the forms and solemnity of worship, a “church” which shall enjoy close cooperation with the ruling authorities, a “church” which every person can safely attend without fear of ridicule from neighbor or workmate, and that because of one thing: because it denies the power of Godliness.

What is that power of Godliness?

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” – Romans 1:16Romans 1:16
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

This “church” will deny the Gospel of Christ. This “church” shall deny sin, and in so doing, deny the need for a Savior. Yet that is the only reason He came:

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” – Luke 5:32Luke 5:32
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

When we speak of “the Name,” we speak not “This is Bill, this is James, this is Yeshua,” but rather it means the power and authority of Christ to redeem the sins of man. The Name, as we’ve seen before, means the agency by which God the Father redeems and reconciles sinful corrupted mankind with His perfect incorruptible holiness.

The members of this “church” will stand in stark contrast to those who preach the Gospel of sin, repentance and redemption through the effective, complete and wholly unmerited saving work of Christ on the cross. That’s standing in The Name.

Hear, then, the message we must bear!

…he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the Name of the only begotten Son of God.” – John 3:18John 3:18
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other Name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12Acts 4:12
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

“...when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the Name of Jesus, and let them go,
And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his Name.”Acts 5:40-41Acts 5:40-41
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. 41 And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

If ye be reproached for the Name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.” – 1 Peter 4:141 Peter 4:14
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

The church of Philadelphia has passed into history.

We are to be the scattered, seeking our brothers and sisters like rare gold hiding under the shadows of the “church” of Laodicea.

Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you:” – John 12:35John 12:35
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

The hour is late – dusk is upon us! Soon, then, the long night –

The night cometh, when no man can work.” – John 9:4John 9:4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
