Life in the Millennium

“And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship
before me, saith the LORD.

And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die,
neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.” (Isaiah 66:23-24Isaiah 66:23-24

Not many people give a great deal of thought to what will happen at the return of Christ.

Those of us who are rapture-minded may know of verses such as Rev 7:9-10Rev 7:9-10
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

The events from Rev 4 through the end of Rev 19 take place in a period known as the Tribulation, the Time Of Jacob’s Trouble, the End of Days, the Day of the Lord. This is a seven-year period still due to the nation of Israel based on the “seventy sevens  (Hebrew: shib ‘iym shabuwa’)” of Daniel 9:24Daniel 9:24
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

( For much more detail on this, the reader can investigate Sir Robert Anderson’s “The Coming Prince,” but those looking for a brief version can find the relevant information in John MacArthur’s “The Future Of Israel (linked here.)” )

But this study isn’t to speak of Tribulation timing.

We’re here to speak of the Millenium, the Thousand-Year Reign of Yeshua HaMashiach on earth, reigning in Jerusalem from the Throne of David.

What do believers think will be their job description for that thousand years? Most Christians haven’t given that a whole lot of thought. They may know some verses,  but generally think it will be pie in the sky by and by. This, however, isn’t exactly the case. There’s going to be lots going on, for the natural man on earth and for the immortal saints as well.

“But wait,” you say. “Doesn’t the Bible say

And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away?‘ (Rev 21:4Rev 21:4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

It most certainly does. But three verses earlier, it says

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea (Rev 21:1Rev 21:1
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

And in the previous chapter, we read

and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (Rev 20:4Rev 20:4
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Clearly, the removal of tears and death and sorrow and pain happen *after* the thousand years of Christ’s reign.

“Then what *will* we be doing?” you ask.

Good question.

What exactly *will* the Christian of today be doing during the Millennial Reign of Christ?

The Bible offers some rare glimpses into human life during this period, such as Zechariah 8:20-23Zechariah 8:20-23
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

20 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: 21 And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. speedily: or, continually: Heb. going to pray...: Heb. to intreat the face of 22 Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. to pray...: Heb. to intreat the face of 23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.

Cool side study here. In the KJV, you may note the end of v23 with words in italics, like so:

“…for we have heard that God is with you.”

Italics in the KJV mean the words are assumed based on translation, grammatical differences from the parent language,  insertion of articles
(as in this case) and similar things.

But once again, God’s Word speaks the truth. Let’s remove the “assumed” words that the translators stuck in there and read it again:
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard God with you.

Side study over. Back to the fate of the believers during the reign of Christ.

What will we be doing???

Will we be *living* on the earth? The answer to that is a solid “no.” We read Christ’s promise to the church of Philadelphia in Rev 3:12Rev 3:12
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

And every believer should know Jesus’ words from John 14:1-3John 14:1-3
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

14 1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. We’ll be living in the House of God, with Christ – not on earth.

So who will be on earth? The remnant of Israel that comes through the Tribulation, as well as living Tribulation believers and any who have not
taken the mark of the beast spoken of in Rev 13:17Rev 13:17

They will build houses, plant fig trees and vineyards.
And they will go up to the Lord.

And when they die, just like with us, those who have trusted in the Messiah will receive eternal life. Those who have rejected Him, just like today, shall be sent to hell (Greek: Hades) to await the Great White Throne judgement of God. This takes place at the end of the Millennium when the Sea and Death and Hell (Hades) give up their dead for judgement. Those not found in the Book of Life will be thrown into the Lake of Fire (Greek: Gehenna, Hebrew: Ge Hinnom, or Valley of Hinnom)

The Valley of Hinnom was just outside the temple in Jerusalem and in the days of Jesus was a trash dump. Fires burned there continually and the stench was awful. When Jesus spoke of Ge Hinnom, everyone who had ever set foot in Jerusalem knew the exact place he was speaking about.

This is important. Remember Ge Hinnom, the burning garbage dump.

Why is Ge Hinnom important?

The Bible refers to Ge Hinnom as a sinner’s final place of punishment, and is referred to by Jesus 12 times.

In each of these passages, the English is translated simply as “Hell.” This unfortunate translation gives ammunition to some apologists who claim that there is no Hell (ie, “a place of God’s punishment”) and that it merely means “the grave.”

Jack Van Impe has done a fine and rather exhaustive study in to the difference between biblical references to
the grave: (Hebrew: q’eber)
Hell: (Greek: Hades)
and Ge Hinnom (Greek: Gehenna)

and a fine allegory goes something like this.

When you’re arrested by the police, you’re put in jail to await trial and judgment.

God’s jail is referred to as “Hades” and is properly titled “Hell.” Jesus tells us in Luke 16 that it’s a place of torment.

When your court date arrives, you’re released from jail and sent to court to face the judge. This is the “Great White Throne” Judgment of Revelation 20:13Revelation 20:13

If this is so – and I find no reason to accept a “spiritual,” “allegorical” meaning when the literal will do – then the Lake of Fire is indeed the Valley of Hinnom, to the southwest outside the temple precinct of Jerusalem.

Jesus was being as plain as could be when He spoke that sinners would be cast eternally into a burning Lake of Fire which would be situated right outside God’s holy temple.

Literal real people

in a literal real place

literally really burning

eternally.

Now for *your* part, O Christian.

And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.” (Isaiah 66:23-24Isaiah 66:23-24

So. Ge Hinnom is a real place, southwest of Jerusalem and running alongside the city. It will be filled with real sinners, really burning.

REAL well:

And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

Does that sound allegorical to you??

Read v23 once more:

…from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me…

Let’s count, shall we?

12 new moons per year, plus

52 Sabbaths per year, equals

64 times a year

multiplied by a thousand for the Millennial reign.

In other words,

All flesh shall parade past the condemned of God, burning and screaming in the Valley of Hinnom, and we shall do so SIXTY-FOUR THOUSAND TIMES.

Do YOU know a person who doesn’t know Christ?

Your father? Your mother? Your coworker?

How about your children?

Seriously consider if you have it in you.

Can you walk past the flaming, smoldering body of your own son? Your daughter? Your grandson?

Can you do so while they beg and plead for you to pull them out, save them, kill them – anything to stop the torment?

Your reaction?

Disgust!!
