Mistress Cleo Is Clueless (The Psychic Hotline Is Hotter Than You Think)

(For our younger visitors: “Mistress Cleo” was a spokeswoman for a psychic telephone hotline when I wrote this in the mid-1990’s.)

Those who seek after the spirits of the dead lack wisdom from God.  He considers it adultery to seek mystical hidden knowledge from a source other than Himself, and commands us not to consider it:

“Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.” -Leviticus 19:31Leviticus 19:31
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Once again in case you missed it: Those who don’t know God seek the dead.

“And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. ” -Isaiah 19:3Isaiah 19:3

Dead spirits do not rise to walk the earth – judgement awaits them:

” O LORD our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name. They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish..”-Isaiah 26:13-14Isaiah 26:13-14

God considers those with spirits to be possessed – afflicted, infirm and diseased – and Jesus wasted no time casting them out:

“When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:  That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.” -Matthew 8: 16-17Matthew 8: 16-17

It’s not enough to be free of an evil spirit – Jesus must be Lord in your life, or your “house” is empty.

“When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, ‘I will return into my house from whence I came out;’ and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation. ” -Matthew 12:43-45Matthew 12:43-45
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Evil spirits won’t obey tricks of man or useless rituals – only the power of the Lord can move them:

“And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, ‘Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.’
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Hold thy peace, and come out of him.’
And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, ‘What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.’ ” -Mark 1:23-27Mark 1:23-27
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? It’s not merely invoking the name of Jesus that does it – it’s faith in His sacrifice. The spirits know the difference!!

“Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, ‘We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.’ And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.
And the evil spirit answered and said, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?’
And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.” -Acts 19:13-16Acts 19:13-16

Don’t be fooled by supernatural acts – demons can do those as well:

“For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.” -Revelation 16:14Revelation 16:14

These spirits and the people who host them will have a convincing message indeed. But believers in Christ will not be fooled:

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.” -Matthew 24:24-25Matthew 24:24-25

The spirits will not tell you the truth, because they come from Satan:

Don’t be fooled! The spirits of the dead do not return to give testimony or warning, because the people of the earth have sufficient materials – the Word of God!

“Then he (the rich man in torments of Hell) said, ‘I pray thee therefore, father (Abraham,) that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’
Abraham saith unto him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ ” -Luke 16:27-29Luke 16:27-29

And those who don’t believe the Word will certainly not believe in the resurrection of Jesus:

“And he (the rich man in torments of Hell) said, ‘Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.’
And he (Abraham) said unto him, ‘If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.’ ” (Luke 16:30-31Luke 16:30-31
